Women's March Elmira

Q. When is the march and how long will it take?

A. The march will be held on January 19th. It will begin with speeches at 1pm in Wisner Park. We will start walking around 2pm. The march will be over at 3pm. 

Q. What is the route?

A. The march will run from Wisner Park to Cowels Hall on the Elmira College Campus.  The route is .8 miles long wand will take at least 16 minutes to walk. We will be walking on the sidewalk. See Route March and Parking tab for details. 

Q. Where can I park?

A. Parking is available at the city's municipal garages located at 101 E. Gray Street and 150 Baldwin Street. Additional parking is available at private lots including the Chemung Canal Trust Company (1 Chemung Canal Plaza), Community Bank (300 West Water St.), and the former Tops (299 S. Main Street). There is minimal off-street parking near the end of the route. See Route March and Parking tab for details. 

Q. Can I go straight to Cowels Hall in my car?

A. Yes. Cowles Hall will be open beginning at 2pm.

Q. Is it handicap accessible?

A. Yes. Cowels Hall has a wheelchair ramp and elevator. It is located in the rear of the building and and there will be clear signage for it on the day of the march. Park Church, our inclimate weather sight, is wheelchair accessible from their parking lot. There will also be a bus running on a loop between Wisner Park and Cowels Hall

Q. Is there a plan for bad weather?

A. The march will happen rain or shine or snow. In the case of inclimate weather, the speeches will be held inside the Park Church.

A. No. We will be marching on the sidewalks and using the crosswalks. March with caution. 

Q. Will the streets be closed?

Q. Will there be bathrooms?

A. Yes. There will be a port-o-potty available at Wisner Park and public restrooms at Cowels Hall. 

Q. Will there be security?

A. Yes. There will be a police escort as well as Elmira College security on site.

Q. Who is welcome? Can men come?

A. Everyone is welcome: men, women, and  Children. If they are human and care about human rights, they are welcome.

Q. Can I bring my dog?

A. Service dogs are welcome, but please leave your pets at home.

Q. Do I need to register?

A. No. Just attend on the day of the march.

Q. Why is the march on the 19th?

A. There are several other marches happening around the country on January 18th. The planning committee wanted to make sure participants could attend marches all weekend long. 

Q. Why is it being hosted in Elmira?

A. Elmira has long been associated with the struggle for women's rights. Elmira College was the first college to offer women a degree comparable those available to men. The city was home to a number of suffragists and women's rights activists. 

Q. Where can I get the merchandise?

A. You can purchase T-shirts and sweatshirts locally at Strategic Custom Designs, 168 N. Main Street. Ask for the Women's March design! You can order additional items on-line at Women's March Elmira Redbubble store. Pins will be available for purchase at the march or during poster-making sessions.
